Understanding the Different Types of Breast Cancer: What Every Woman Should Know

Breast cancer is not a one-size-fits-all diagnosis. In fact, there are many different types of breast cancer, each with its own characteristics, behaviors, and treatment strategies. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for choosing the right diagnostic tools and healing options.

At the Center for New Medicine (CFNM) in Irvine, California, we prioritize accurate, early detection with advanced non-toxic technology such as the QT scan. This radiation-free imaging method helps identify different types of breast cancer before they progress—giving women the opportunity to take control of their health in a safe and holistic way.

In this article, we’ll explore eight different types of breast cancer, explain how they differ, and show how CFNM is redefining breast care through integrative, patient-centered treatment.

1. Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS)

One of the earliest types of breast cancer, DCIS is considered non-invasive or “stage 0.” It occurs when abnormal cells are found in the lining of the milk ducts but haven’t spread to nearby tissue. While not life-threatening, DCIS can increase the risk of developing invasive breast cancer later. Early detection is key—and painless QT scan breast imaging can help identify DCIS before symptoms arise.

2. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC)

This is the most common of all different types of breast cancer, making up about 80% of diagnoses. IDC begins in the milk ducts and breaks through into surrounding tissue. From there, it may spread to lymph nodes and beyond. Because of its aggressive potential, catching IDC early is crucial. At CFNM, we use safe and gentle imaging to identify signs of IDC without radiation.

3. Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC)

ILC begins in the lobules—the glands that produce milk—and then invades nearby tissues. Unlike IDC, ILC can be harder to detect with traditional mammograms due to its tendency to grow in single-file lines. That’s why alternative screening methods such as QT scan breast imaging are so valuable in identifying these less-visible types of breast cancer.

4. Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Triple-negative breast cancer is one of the more aggressive types of breast cancer and is defined by the absence of estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2 protein. This makes it unresponsive to many common hormonal therapies. However, an integrative approach—including nutritional support, immune modulation, and detoxification—can provide a powerful path forward when combined with early detection.

5. HER2-Positive Breast Cancer

In these types of breast cancer, cells produce too much of a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), which encourages rapid growth. HER2-positive cancers can spread quickly, but they often respond well to targeted therapies. At CFNM, we support these patients with individualized protocols that address the whole body—helping reduce recurrence risk while strengthening immunity.

6. Inflammatory Breast Cancer

Though rare, inflammatory breast cancer is one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer. It typically causes the breast to appear red, swollen, and warm, due to cancer cells blocking lymphatic vessels. Because it progresses quickly and can be misdiagnosed, timely imaging and action are critical. That’s why our center offers painless, fast imaging tools such as QT scans to stay ahead of disease.

7. Paget’s Disease of the Breast

This uncommon form of breast cancer affects the skin of the nipple and areola. Symptoms often mimic a rash or eczema, which can delay diagnosis. Though rare, it’s important to include Paget’s Disease in discussions about different types of breast cancer, especially when exploring unexplained skin changes. Our team is trained to take a comprehensive look at breast health—beyond just tumors.

8. Metastatic Breast Cancer

Also known as stage IV breast cancer, this refers to any type of breast cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body, such as bones, lungs, or liver. Though more advanced, many women live for years with the right support. At CFNM, we work with patients who are navigating metastatic disease, providing gentle diagnostics, targeted therapies, and holistic care to improve quality of life.

How CFNM Supports Different Types of Breast Cancer with Non-Toxic Screening

Each of the different types of breast cancer discussed above behaves differently—but they all benefit from early, accurate detection. That’s why we’ve adopted QT scan breast imaging, a revolutionary technology that uses sound waves (not radiation) to generate clear 3D images of the breast.

Here’s why it’s the future of breast cancer care:

  • No radiation or compression
  • Comfortable and non-invasive
  • Safe for all breast types and ages
  • Ideal for frequent, proactive screening

Whether you’re concerned about a specific lump or simply committed to regular screening, the QT scan offers a gentle, accurate solution.
