What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY (HBOT) is an American Medical Association (AMA) recognized medical treatment that uses pressurized oxygen administered inside a specially designed chamber to deliver 100% oxygen to oxygen-starved tissues and remote areas of the body. It is medicine’s most efficient method of transporting oxygen to cells throughout the body. Therapy has demonstrated dramatic benefits for Stroke patients, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injuries, Plastic Surgery Recovery, Diabetic Ulcers, Burns and other conditions in which poor circulation plays a role.
How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Work?
HBOT TREATMENTS take place in a clinical setting at our Irvine center. Our FDA 510(k) Clearance treatment systems provide a comfortable lay down or sitting environment. Patients breathe pure oxygen while the treatment system is at 2 to 3 times that of normal atmosphere. At this pressure, oxygen, which is normally delivered to tissues via the hemoglobin in red blood cells, dissolves in all of your body’s fluids – the plasma, cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spinal cord, and lymph. It is then easily transported to all tissues, even those with a poor blood flow. Up to 15 times the oxygen will be delivered to tissues than under normal conditions.
The typical treatment session lasts around an hour, during which you can watch a movie, listen to music, read, or simply relax. We work with your primary care physician to customize a treatment regimen for your specific needs, typically from 5 to 40 sessions.
Are Your Treatments Covered by Your Insurance and Medicare?
OUR KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF will guide you and your primary care physician through the Medicare and private insurance qualification process for Various Infections • Burns • Diabetic Ulcers • Arterial Insufficiencies • Severe Anemia, Air or Gas Embolism • Gas Gangrene • Crush Injuries • Acute Peripheral Ischemia • Carbon Monoxide and Other Poisoning Issues • Compromised Skin Grafts and Flaps • Bone Infections (Osteomyelitis) • Delayed Radiation Injury
Where Else Can HBOT Help?
AUTISM • Stroke • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Cardiac Problems • Migraine Headaches, Cerebral Palsy • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Fibromyalgia • Lyme Disease • Sport Injuries Postsurgical Healing • Coma • Physical and Brain Rehabilitation
DIABETIC ULCERS is the leading cause of avoidable extremity amputations in the United States. Out of about 23 million Americans with diabetes, as many as 20 percent will develop foot ulcers, some of which may lead to amputation, according to the American Family Physician Journal. HBOT treatment has been shown to be effective treatment for patients with diabetic foot ulcers due to poor circulation when antibiotics have proven ineffective. One study found that 89 percent of patients using the hyperbaric therapy avoided amputation after developing ulcers.
Diabetes prevalence increases with age as does other circulatory diseases leading to the current medical crisis in elderly lower leg and foot amputations which in must cases is avoidable with HBOT therapy. The US Government has approved HBOT therapy for Medicare recipients and the SBHBOT Center has gone one-step further by accepting your Medicare benefit as payment in full waiving any co-pay.
Our staff will work with your primary care provider to design the optimum regimen specifically for the severity of your wound and general health.
PATIENTS WHO HAVE SUFFERED A RECENT STROKE can avoid or minimize paralysis, speech difficulties, and other impairment, while those whose stroke occurred months or years prior, can make significant strides toward greater function and independence. HBOT acts on many different fronts to protect the brain from further damage and help it rebuild itself by improving microcirculation, relieves edema and reduces the free radical burden. Further increasing the supply of oxygen to stroke stricken dormant nerve cells revitalizing and enabling them to resume their normal function.
HBOT HAS PROVEN TO MINIMIZE scarring, reduce swelling and shorten the recuperation period of many patients undergoing cosmetic surgery. When the skin is damaged or burned during procedure, the capillaries supplying oxygen to the skin allow fluid into the surrounding tissues where it causes swelling and pain. Inflammation decreases blood flow to the injured area and also interferes with proper alignment of the severed edges resulting in scars and infection. Our staff will work with your Cosmetic Surgeon to design the optimum regimen specifically for the procedure you are undertaking with your skin and general health.
CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC AGENTS attack cancer cells largely by acting as potent oxidants, but they do not distinguish between malignant and normal cells, and thus damage healthy as well as cancer tissue.
Repeated HBOT Therapy sessions prior to chemotherapy may ensure that the body’s normal tissues are in much better condition to cope with the oxidative stress imposed by the subsequent chemotherapy. Thus, the intent of Oxidative Preconditioning Therapy is to make chemotherapy more tolerable for the patient while simultaneously improving the ability of the cancer treatment to destroy the tumor.
The Cancer Center For Hope’s Oxidative Preconditioning Therapy is to give patients hyperbaric oxygen sessions combined with Nutraceuticals and Trental (Pentoxifylline), to augment HBOT’s effect. Trental is FDA-approved for the improvement the flow of blood by decreasing its viscosity (making it “thinner”), increasing blood flow through the microcirculation system and enhancing tissue oxygenation.
Our staff along with Cancer Center For Hope’s physicians will work along side your primary care physician to design a pre- and post-chemotherapy treatment protocol specifically for your condition.
Why We Are The Preferred HBOT Treatment Center
DR. DONALD JOLLY-GABRIEL is the Executive Director of the South Bay Hyperbaric Center (SBHB) for Oxygen Treatment at the Center for New Medicine. Prior to creating the SBHBOT Dr. Jolly-Gabriel was the founder of the hyperbaric oxygen therapy program at Whitaker Wellness and Director of Hyperbaric Medicine for 10 years.
Dr. Jolly-Gabriel has worked along side Dr. David Hughes in the UK and Dr. Richard A. Neubauer in the US, both pioneers in this field of Hyperbaric Oxygen Medicine. Dr. Jolly-Gabriel was commissioned by Dr. Neubauer to create the Richard A. Neubauer Research Institute for the advancement of Hyperbaric Oxygen Medicine of which Dr. Jolly-Gabriel is currently the President.
South Bay Hyperbaric Center at the Center for New Medicine in Irvine, California has strived to develop and maintain the leading clinical center for hyperbaric therapy. Unlike many hyperbaric therapy centers, our patient treatment staff is composed of licensed medical professionals. Under the same roof as our hyperbaric treatment systems are leading specialty physicians and state-of-the-art acute critical care facilities.
Case Histories and Testimonials
